Greetings, my name is Jennifer Tosch, I am the founder of the Black Heritage Tours. First, I give all praise and glory to God, honor to our ancestors, and gratitude to all of you who have come to experience this history-making cultural tour. About myself: I am Surinamese-American (SuriAm). My parents were born and raised in Suriname, South America. I have one amazing daughter, Noel and a host of family and friends throughout the world!
In 1964, just before I was born, they immigrated to the United States. This was at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Most of my youth I spent living in San Francisco and Oakland, California. I am a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and currently reside in Amsterdam, Netherlands (NL), working on a dual Masters in Heritage and Memory Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
Initially, I came to Amsterdam for an intensive two-week postcolonial history course, given by the Black Europe Summer School (BESS) in Amsterdam, NL. Another reason going was to conduct research about my mother who had lived and studied in the Netherlands for several years just after World War II.
The inspiration for the tours first came not only from the transformative experience I had as a student of the BESS, but also from a void that I encountered regarding positive narratives about the presence and contributions of the African Diaspora in the Netherlands. After sharing my experiences with family and friends, I firmly believed I could contribute my share to the process of unearthing the lives of our hidden histories in Europe and in 2013 Black Heritage Tours in Amsterdam was born. The journey has been nothing short of amazing. We've built a sustainable business by collaborating with an awesome team of scholars, historians, public officials, businesses, and heritage tourism professional
Since launching the tour in Amsterdam, NL we have added tours in Brussels, Belgium; and; starting in 2016 we've expanded Black Heritage Tours to New York State! I hope you will join us soon on a truly unforgettable journey.
Thank you for visiting the website and for your interest in my story.
